What is a plastic worm rig?

The plastic worm rig is the favoured method of catching bass during freshwater fishing purely and simply because it has proven most effective over the years. In fact, the plastic worm rig is so effective that it actually has a greater success ration than all other forms of bait put together!

A plastic worm is a lure used in bass fishing that is usually designed to look like an earthworm and therefore attracts the fish. They come in various shapes and sizes so you can choose the ones that you want to use. They are all obviously made of plastic, but they can be scented. This involves making the plastic worm smell like a live one to enhance your chances of success.

Plastic worm rigs are the way in which the worms themselves are attached or “rigged up” to the line when you are out fishing. There are many different types of rig used, depending on the season, conditions and type of bass you are fishing for. They are usually rigged on a small hook with a split shot weight attached in order to keep the bait below the surface of the water.

The most popular rig used is the Texas rig. A weight, usually a bullet-shaped one, is attached to the line along with a small coloured bead before the hook is added. The worm is then placed on the hook and forced down to the shank. For the finishing touch, the hook is then pushed into the body of the worm. Of course, you can use other rigs for bass fishing, but which ever option you choose should bring you a measure of success.
