When would I need to use a “wire guarded hook”?
Every good fisherman or woman should know exactly when to use to use certain pieces of equipment in order to be able to fish at a high level of efficiency for the duration of any fishing expedition. However, the wire guard is one of the most misused and this has often caused problems for the fishing enthusiast concerned. A wire guard is not part of the fish hook but should be attached to it as and when you are fishing in a medium to densely vegetated area. The source of the vegetation could be under the topwater or indeed on the top water, like reeds for example, but the whole point of a wire guard is to protect the hook itself. The whole purpose of the wire guard is to prevent the vegetation from getting caught on the hook as you drag it past. This is not foolproof and weeds do sometimes get caught on the hook regardless, but it will drastically cut down on the amount getting caught on the hook. The guard actually comes over the front of the hook itself so that vegetation cannot get to the hook. In effect, this principle allows you to fish in the vegetation so it is actually much easier to catch bass when the weather is cooler. There are a number of different wire guards available on the market and some of those are extremely successful in terms of the success rate so they are most definitely worth checking otu if you plan to go to a densely vegetated lake any time soon!
