I catch several larger smallmouth bass on the wing dikes in the Sioux City,Iowa area. They are usually 3 to 5.5 LBS. I will stand on the end of the wing dike right at the edge of the water and throw a Cotton Cordell big "O",a white or smoke colored tube, A leadhead with a 3" Mister Twister Sassy shad Or A Rapala Husky jerk. Note: When you throw any of these baits,I always throw them up stream and then retrieve them trying to bounce them of the rocks under the surface. I hope this information will help somebody out there next time they want to fish small mouths in the Sioux City,Iowa area. Good luck fishing. Smallmouth Tim "with the big mouth"

They do come up on Ebay every few months. I was able to amass a small collection over about a year. I have payed into the $20's for new ones in the box and less than $10 for used ones. I will have to disagree that they are just for collecting- these are for fishing!!! Actually if aren't obsessed with these exact baits like me, The Luhr Jensen Bass Oreno is basically the same bait and it is still in production. I would just add a bucktail treble hook on the rear to more closely simulate the Billy.
Billy is an absolutely fantastic topwater bait- works with a slow retrieve on the shallow dive or can make a vicious chug like a magnum pop-R. Or you can finesse it and just make it spit and skip across the surface (even backing up, if your good) , causing just the minimum amount of ruckus, and the WHOOOSH that big mossback crushes your Billy Bass!
Good luck and great fishing!!!

Interesting piece on Ike's rules of bass fishing. I tend to lean towards the past beginner stage since I have been bass fishing for over 48 years. But you never know what you can pick up along the way.

Hi Dan,
I think you missed the species on this one. I believe Todd is looking for freshwater largemouth bass, not sea bass. While there are a number of great lakes for bass fishing in Mexico, non of them are close enough to Cabo or Ensenada for a day trip.

I have caught some of the biggest bass I have ever caught at night using topwater baits such as frogs and buzzbaits, but beleive it or not, a jig with a big trailer is VERY effective as well. I use no lights at all, just let your eyes get adjusted to the dark and go often. You will be amazed!! I have almost the state record from Delaware at 10.16 pounds and have detailed videos and articles on night fishing at my site. I will be happy to answer any questions. I am the 98 Big Bass World Champ and NAFC Hall Of fame angler. Tight lines, Steve

Dan is right on the money again. I use jerkbaits very effectively in the early spring and when bass are still inactive. They work in clear to stained water the best as they are a sight bait. I have a full range of articles on this technique at my site as well as forums and will be happy to answer any questions in detail.

A fluke is a soft plastic bait with a split tail rigged Texas style with no weight. You can work it quickly near the top and it wags side to side much like a Zara spook, or let it sink and work it underwater in the 1-2 foot range. It's great for schooling fish or worked around pad fields.
