When fishing shallow water for fish that are in an inactive phase you
may want to have a supply of plastic worms on hand. These
lures are typically hooked in a manner that makes them almost virtually
weedless and able to go through almost any form of cover.
They are fished very slowly along the bottom of the lake.
You will need a different supply of tackle when fishing deeper
water. For Largemouth bass any water deeper than ten feet is
consider "deep water". Largemouth bass can either be active
or inactive when they reside in deep water. You will need a different
approach for each.
For active Largemouth Bass crankbaits are the best offering when
fishing deep water. The key is to match the style of
crankbait to the fishing situation. A crankbait is generally
made of wood or plastic and closely resemble a small fish or other
common forage species. It will have a plastic lip near the
eye of the lure. The shape, angle and size of this lip will
determine how deep the bait runs when retrieved. Ideally you
want to select a crankbait that comes close to or even touches the
bottom of the lake. This lure is meant to be retrieved
rapidly and to attract active bass that will swim long distances to eat.
For deep water Largemouth Bass that are inactive you need to change
your approach. This is where the jig comes in
handy. Jigs are versatile deep water lures that can be used
along or with a combo trailer. Many angler like to apply a
pork rind to the back of their jigs. This combination lure is
called "a jig and pig". This lure is fished very slowly and
near the bottom for inactive fish.
