Do you have a favorite rod and reel for Bass fishing?
The choice of which rod and reel to use is dependant on what type of fishing you are attempting. If you are fishing when the bass are hitting lightly then it is important you use a rod with a sensitive feel to it. Being able to recognize gentle hits is a skill that puts more fish in the livewell in these situations. You want to use a reel with an excellent drag in these situations. You will typically be fishing with very light line to entice strikes from wary bass. If you do happen to hook a large one you will be glad you have a drag that allows you to play him with the required patience to bring him into the boat.
If you are fishing an area of extreme heavy cover you may want a rod with a heavy backbone. In these situations you need to set the hook quickly and firmly and then horse your fish to the boat so it does not wrap your line around the obstructions you are fishing near. Similarly you want to select a reel in these situations that has a high gear ratio and will pull the fish in quickly. You are typically using heavy line in these situations.
Fishing to exact points requires a rod with smooth consistent casting action. It is hard to make precision casts with an imperfect rod. My personal choice would be one of the old Fenwick six foot spincasting rods.
In conclusion I think the main factor you need to be concerned with is matching the equipment to the type of fishing you are doing. If you stay consistent, use a rod that work with a reel rather than against it you will not go wrong.
