I have new quantum accurist baitcasting reel on a 7′0 Heavy Action Rod with a fast action. My question is can I use this rod for flipping. I am not comfortable with a 7′6 rod and I want to use this rod to for fishing a topwater frog in hvy cover.
Your reel choice is excellent. The Quantum Accurist bait casting reel comes with a Flippin’ switch. When the switch is turned to the “F” position on the reel you have as good a reel as you can get for this fishing style. The angler first needs to press the thumb bar and release the required amount of line. As you flip the line to the area you are targeting you release the thumb bar. When you release the thumb bar your reel is once again engaged and ready for a hook set without the need to change hands. It is an excellent choice for flipping. Your other issue concerns the rod. You certainly can use a seven foot heavy action rod. I would not say it is the best choice. My experience has been that a longer rod gives you much more control. Certainly with a shorter rod you will need to be a little closer to your target and make flips that are a bit shorter than those made with a longer rod. My advice to you would be to use the longer rod and over time develop a comfort level that you do not current have with a rod of this length. This issue however generally comes down to personal choice by the angler. An angler experienced in the art of flipping in heavy cover can and should use whatever he can be successful with. There is absolutely no reason you cannot have great success using the combo you listed. If this is what you are comfortable with then by all means get out on the water early and often with it in your hands.
