I have a grandson who wants to become a professional fisherman (like thousands of teens and adults). I have yet to find a book or significant article on the subject. Is there one? My grandson lives in an area not well-known for fish, but he has caught more big fish for his age(17) than most men do in their lifetime. He’s relentless when he gets a rod, reel and lures in his hands. P.S. If there isn’t one, you might consider writing it.
Wow, he sounds like he has a bright future if he already has that focus and drive to succeed at age 17! At least he has found his passion. That, unfortunately eludes most of us until the day we die. If he has this dedication now then the likelihood is that it will continue into the future so he will need a solid foundation of knowledge as well.
There are books and articles available for you to tap into that can really help him in his quest to become a professional. However, many of them only pass fleetingly over the issue of how to become a professional fisherman. In order to get a good idea of how to turn his hobby into a career, your grandson would have to take a good look at many of the resources and take the best bits from them.
There is a great Internet site that encourages fishermen to turn professional. It is at http://www.sfpb.ca/. Although it concentrates on the Scotia Fundy area, it tells you much that you need to know about turning professional and has a list of links that may also be useful.
If he does want to try out a book then Erwin Bauer’s "Bass Fisherman’s Bible" is a good read. Although it will not tell your grandson how to turn professional, it will let him into many of the tricks of the trade that professionals use.
The final option is to contact fishing and fishermen’s associations in your local area. They will be able to give you good advice for your grandson in terms of making it as a professional. This may be your best bet for personalised advice.
