Have stick worms replaced soft jerk bait?
Though both stick worms and soft jerk bait are popular choices among fishermen everywhere, most people agree that they both still have a place in the world of fishing. There does not seem to be anytime or fishing situation in which the new stick worms fail to produce good sized catches, but the one time that soft jerk bait can be more productive is during the colder months. The predominant reason cited for both having unique uses is the fact that when you want a slowly sinking bait, jerkbait is the better choice. If you are fishing cold water, jerkbait is also going to be a better choice, because you will not get as much movement as the bait is falling, and in cold, clear water, it can make all the difference. If you are using soft stick worms, Texas rig them and don’t use any added weight. Cast into the edges of areas rich with cover, and watch for that telltale little twitch that will tell you a large mouth bass just grabbed your bait! Another method is to screw a 1/8 ounce Florida weight into the nose of a stick worm, rig it weedless, cast into heavy cover, and reel it in slowly to mimic a snake in the cover.
