i have a chance to buy spinning rod/reel combo. what action should I choose (would be catching 2-5 lbs bass mostly) I’m thinking between ML and M. which one should i choose????!!!!! maybe something better? thank you for having this website and time for me.
A lot will depend on where you are fishing. If you will be river fishing for smallmouth bass, a medium-light action rod will work fine. For lakes, and largemouth bass, there are several considerations, the first of which is what kind of fishing will you be doing. If you will be using mostly live-bait, a medium action may work, although a bit heavier rod and bait-casting reel would be better. Largemouth Bass like to run back into cover when hooked, so you need a rod and reel strong enough to prevent this. If you plan on using plastic worms, you’re going to need a med-heavy to heavy action rod and a good bait-casting reel. Your rod will have to be stiff enough to instantly set the hook, and drive it through both the worm, and the fishes mouth, deeply, and physically yank them from cover. Using crank-baits will require at least a med-heavy rod due to the heavy swimming action of the lures. Running a crank-bait deep puts a real strain on both the rod and the line. You’ll need to have enough flex left in the rod to set the hook when a bass bites. Likewise with Spoons such as Daredevils and the Johnson Silver Minnow, Little Cleo, etc…. For French Spinners, Inline Spinners and jigs, a med-light should work fine. This is more of a finesse-type fishing ,where sensitivity and technique are more important than brute strength. A med-light will also work with top-water lures like Chuggers, Poppers, Devil’s Horses, Tiny Torpedos, Crazy Crawlers, Hula Poppers, most Rapala minnows, Spinner-Baits, Buzz-Baits and similar lures. Happy fishing!
