Soup du lure….

Which striped bass lure do you use most often?

I am a die-hard fly fisherman, so my most often used lure for striped bass is a Puglisi-Style Shad pattern, or the same pattern tied in bluegill colors. I tie my own flies. This has produced more striped bass for me than any other bait I have ever used, including live-bait.

My next best pattern is one called the Polar Minnow, tied with white Polar Fibers. My last best fly is a large Woolly-Bugger tied in red and white, with the forward half of the fly red, and the rear white, with a red palmered hackle.

My best spinning lure is the Sassy Shad in grey and white, or chartruese and white. When used correctly, these things are deadly. Another old standard that is still a top producer is a large, plain white bucktail jig. And lastly, the best deep water lure I have ever used for striped bass is the large-size Shad Rap.
