What toplures work best for Bass Fishing?
There are several good topwater lures you can catch Largemouth Bass. For my money the best is the reliable spinnerbait. The spinnerbait is a versatile lure. It can be fished anywhere from on the surface to 3 feet below the water surface successfully. By varying the speed of retrieve you can fish this bait in several different manners. The first choice you need to make when selecting a spinnerbait is what type of blade to use. Spinnerbaits come with two different kinds of blades. The willow leaf blade is shaped like a willow leaf. This blade is designed to give maximum reflection of the available light. Use this blade when you are trying to attract the bass visually. The other popular spinnerbait uses what is often called an “Indiana style” blade. This blade is much more rounded and is cupped on the edges. This blades purpose is to attract Largemouth Bass through sound by the vibration it creates in the water. Your second choice is what color jig head and skirt to use. In most conditions I prefer white for the skirt/jig head combo. I have found white to be more effective than other colors when fishing spinnerbaits. You do want to have other colors in your arsenal however for times white just does not seem to work. A similar lure to the spinnerbait is the buzzbait. A buzzbait uses a blade that rotates quickly on top of the water as it is retrieved. It is definitely a “sound” bait, creating much more sound and disturbance than any spinnerbait. It is designed to imitate a fleeing bait fish heading towards the surface. If you go with either of these two baits you cannot go wrong. They are both excellent for catching topwater Largemouth Bass.
